GEO score: examples and methodology · Google: AI features and your website
What a GEO check measures
Structured data (JSON-LD)
Machine-readable markup that lets AI engines extract your facts and entities instead of guessing.
Content extractability
Whether your core content is in server-rendered HTML that AI crawlers can read without running JavaScript.
Answer-first, quotable copy
Clear definitions and question-and-answer content that a model can lift straight into an answer.
Heading & topic clarity
A logical outline that signals what each section covers, so engines pick the right passage to cite.
AI crawler access
That robots rules allow the search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Google Search uses Googlebot; Google-Extended controls separate Gemini uses.
Entity & trust signals
Signals that help an AI engine attribute and trust your page as a source worth quoting.
What the GEO score can establish
The GEO score summarizes observed access, extractability, content and attribution checks on one page. For an illustrative page with otherwise strong content but a failing serverRendered check, one critical failure caps the GEO dimension at 55. Publishing the main answer in the initial HTML removes that failure; it does not prove that an AI engine will cite the page. Use actual referral and citation data to measure visibility.
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is optimizing your website to be read and cited by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews — the AI-era counterpart to SEO. Where SEO aims for a ranking in a list of links, GEO aims to be the source an AI quotes inside its generated answer. It rewards structured data, clear definitions, quotable facts and machine-readable content.
GEO vs AEO vs SEO
These terms overlap. SEO optimizes for classic search rankings; AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets direct-answer features; GEO targets citations inside AI-generated responses. In practice they share a foundation — fast, clean, well-structured, trustworthy pages — but GEO leans hardest on machine-readable structure and quotable content. WebAnalyzer's GEO score measures that foundation directly.
Why check your GEO score now
AI answer engines are capturing a fast-growing share of searches, and most websites have never been optimized for them — which means the competition for AI citations is far thinner than for traditional rankings. Checking and improving your GEO score now, while the space is new, is the cheapest time to become a cited source before your competitors catch on.
How the GEO score is calculated
WebAnalyzer's GEO checker runs 26 individual checks in four groups. Extractability: server-rendered content, semantic HTML landmarks, a clean heading outline and content chunked into liftable sections. Answer shape: question headings, direct answers up top, quotable statistics, FAQ coverage and comparison content. Trust and attribution: author and entity signals, machine-readable dates, outbound citations and schema that matches the page. AI access: robots.txt rules for the AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot), llms.txt and other agent-readiness signals. Each failed check comes with its specific fix, so the score doubles as a prioritized to-do list.
Frequently asked questions
What is a GEO checker?
A GEO checker evaluates observed crawler access, content extractability, structure and attribution. WebAnalyzer shows the overall eight-area score first; email unlocks the GEO breakdown and report. The score does not measure actual citations.
What is a good GEO score?
On WebAnalyzer's 0–100 scale, 80+ is excellent — your content is structured, quotable and reachable by AI engines. 60–79 is solid with specific gaps, and below 50 means AI engines are likely struggling with your site (blocked crawlers, JavaScript-only content or nothing liftable). Most sites score lower than they expect on the first run, because almost nobody has optimized for AI engines yet.
How do I check my GEO score for free?
Paste a public domain or page URL. The initial result is the overall score across eight areas; email unlocks the requested dimension breakdown and report. Three successful analyses per network are free each UTC day.
How do I improve my GEO score?
Add JSON-LD structured data, keep core content in server-rendered HTML, write answer-first and quotable content with clear headings, and allow the AI search crawlers in robots.txt. WebAnalyzer flags which of these you're missing so you can prioritize.
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO optimizes for ranking in traditional search results; GEO optimizes for being cited inside AI-generated answers. They share a foundation, but GEO puts more weight on machine-readable structure and quotable content. WebAnalyzer scores both.
Which AI engines does GEO target?
Mainly ChatGPT (and its search), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and similar answer engines. GEO improves your odds of being read, trusted and cited by all of them, since they rely on similar signals.
